Alex Read raising money for the Sussex Cancer Fund

Hi my name is Alex Read. Starting 6th March 2018 I will be completing a one wheeled challenge to raise money for the Sussex Cancer Fund. Here’s my story:

During my dad’s recent treatment at the Royal Sussex County Hospital it struck me how little I could do to actually help him.

Following his initial treatment my mum and dad wanted to give some money to the Sussex Cancer Fund for all the great work they do. That's where I thought I could have the opportunity to help... by doing something a little bit mad!

Starting 6th March 2018 I will be doing my daily commute to work and back, for one set of shifts (6 days) on a unicycle. That's over 26 km per day for 6 days totaling just over 158 km (99 miles.) Anyone who has ever tried to ride a unicycle will realize how hard (and not to mention uncomfortable) it is to even try and ride 99 meters, and those of you who haven't tried I’m sure can imagine!  All of this whilst working 9 hour shifts in between will quite frankly be pretty grim so I really hope we can raise some much needed funds for this great charity.

The Sussex Cancer Fund supports the NHS for cancer care in Sussex. They provide equipment and fund research at the Sussex cancer centre meaning anyone in Sussex who has had cancer will have been touched by the work they do. They also provide a free car park for cancer patients which I can say really helped provide one less worry for my parents when they were traveling to Brighton for my dad’s treatment.  There is also only one part time employee and less than 4 pence in every pound is spent on admin costs.

Why the unicycle? I wanted to do something different to raise money that not anyone could do and that’s where the unicycle came in. I also needed to be able to still go to work and I am really happy with the way the challenge has worked out. Working in-between each ride, just like my dad, managing to go to work in-between each treatment.

I learnt to ride on a cheap 20 inch unicycle and realised that I was going to need something a bit more suited to longer distances for this challenge. As a regular mountain bike racer I was already hooked on 29 inch wheels so the only ride for the job was a 29er from unicycles.co.uk. Got to say I really enjoy riding it! It’s a great bit of kit!

Here is a link to my Just Giving page where you can get involved and donate. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this and thanks even more if you can chuck some money at this great charity!
