What is UNICON? The Unicycle World Championships Explained

If you are new to the unicycling world, you may have heard riders talk about UNICON and wondered what it actually is. Is it a race? A convention? A world championship? The answer is: it is all of those things, and much more.

UNICON stands for UNIcycle CONvention. It is the biggest international gathering in the sport and is best known as the Unicycle World Championships. Every two years, riders from around the world come together to compete, learn, perform, socialise, and celebrate everything to do with riding on one wheel.

More than just a competition

UNICON is often described as the Olympics of unicycling. It brings together the best riders from many countries, but it is not only for elite competitors. It is also a huge convention for the wider unicycling community.

At UNICON you will find world championship events, workshops, demonstrations, social rides, shows, cultural exchanges, and plenty of opportunities to meet other unicyclists. For many riders, it is the highlight of the unicycling calendar.

What events are held at UNICON?

One of the great things about unicycling is how varied the sport is. UNICON reflects that variety with a wide range of disciplines, including:

  • Track racing – sprint and middle-distance races on the athletics track.
  • Road racing – longer distance events such as 10 km and marathon races.
  • Muni – mountain unicycling, including cross-country, uphill, and downhill events.
  • Freestyle – choreographed routines, often performed to music, either solo, in pairs, or as a group.
  • Trials – technical riding over obstacles, where balance, precision, and control are essential.
  • Street and flatland – trick-based urban riding with a focus on creativity and style.
  • Jumps – high jump and long jump competitions on a unicycle.
  • Team sports – including unicycle hockey and unicycle basketball.

This range of events is one of the reasons UNICON is so special. A rider might be a fast marathon racer, a technical trials specialist, a graceful freestyle performer, or a team sport player, and all of them have a place at the same world championship event.

Who runs UNICON?

UNICON is connected with the International Unicycling Federation, often shortened to IUF. The IUF helps support international unicycling, sets competition rules, and oversees the world championship structure.

The first UNICON was held in Syracuse, New York, USA, in 1984. Since then, the event has travelled around the world, with past host locations including Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, China, Switzerland, Denmark, New Zealand, Italy, Canada, France, South Korea, and the United States.

Is UNICON only for professional riders?

No. While UNICON attracts the very best riders in the world, it is also a community event. Many people attend to take part, improve their riding, meet friends, watch the competitions, or simply experience the atmosphere.

There are events for different ages and ability levels, and the convention side of UNICON means there is plenty to enjoy even if you are not competing for a world title.

For younger riders, it can be hugely inspiring to see what is possible on a unicycle. For experienced riders, it is a chance to test themselves against the world’s best. For families and spectators, it is a rare opportunity to see the full range of unicycling in one place.

What makes UNICON special?

UNICON is special because it brings the whole unicycling world together.

Most sports separate their disciplines into different events, venues, or organisations. At UNICON, racing, mountain riding, freestyle, trials, street, flatland, hockey, basketball, and long-distance riding all sit side by side.

That creates a unique atmosphere. Riders who normally focus on completely different styles get to watch each other, learn from each other, and share ideas. A trials rider might be inspired by freestyle. A road racer might try muni. A hockey player might discover flatland. The result is a celebration of the entire sport, not just one part of it.

When is the next UNICON?

UNICON is normally held every two years. The next event, UNICON 22, is due to take place in Steyr, Austria, in 2026.

The event is expected to include more than 30 disciplines across two weeks of competition and convention activities, bringing together riders, spectators, volunteers, and fans from around the world.

Why should unicyclists care about UNICON?

Whether you are just learning to ride or have been unicycling for years, UNICON shows what the sport can become. It proves that unicycling is not just a circus skill or a novelty. It is a global sport with serious athletes, creative performers, technical specialists, team players, and a friendly international community.

For beginners, UNICON is a source of inspiration. For competitive riders, it is the biggest stage in the sport. For the whole unicycling community, it is a reminder that one wheel can take you a very long way.

Final thoughts

UNICON is the unicycle world championships, but it is also much more than that. It is a festival, a convention, a meeting place, and a celebration of unicycling in all its forms.

From track racing to mountain unicycling, from freestyle routines to team sports, UNICON brings together the full spectrum of the sport. It is where world champions are crowned, friendships are made, and the future of unicycling is shaped.

Whether you are a rider, a parent, a coach, a spectator, or simply curious about unicycling, UNICON is the event that shows just how big, varied, and exciting the world of one wheel really is.
