Description

The Hatchet unicycle is our best selling Mountian Unicycle. The frame comes with the brake installed on a new precision IS frame mount for more rigidity through the brake calliper. The hose is also clipped in place with red aluminium hose clips. Comes with the 80mm wide Nimbus Dominator+ rim wrapped in the Massive Maxxis Minion FBR 4.8″ tyre. The main challenge with Fat-Uni’s” is the requirement for a super wide frame. This can make it uncomfortable to ride as it catches the riders’ legs. To resolve this the Nimbus Hatchet moves the frame behind the riders legs giving maximum clearance.

One of the main advantages to larger wheels in general, is the rolling speed. This comes down to larger wheels having a smaller angle of approach for getting over obstacles and bumps / variations in trail surface. They will also carry more momentum due to the increased rotational weight, so maintaining speed is a little easier. The smaller the wheel, more maneuverable it will feel, and the reduced weight will also help with acceleration for when short bursts of speed are needed.

This frame will hold a tyre up to 26″ x 5.05″, 27.5″ x 4″ and 29″ x 3.0″.

Before I got on a Hatchet I was a bit intimidated by it, and by the idea of being perched up so high off the ground (my previous ride was a 20″, this is effectively a 30″ diameter, counting the tyre.) Imagine my surprise when I discovered that it was far more stable and more comfortable than my smaller uni. As a result, I can go twice or three times as far as I did before on a daily basis, and with less effort. Amazing. Nimbus has a winner here, and I am sure they know it. It is a brilliant bit of design, functionally as well as aesthetically. May I make some suggestions for further evolution of the model? 1. My model came with 150 mm cranks. OK for the more athletic types, but I have ridden another Hatchet with 170 mm cranks, and as a result I suggest providing 170’s in the future on all Hatchets, but with triple threading, so you can convert the cycle on the fly to either 160 mm or 150 mm depending on riding conditions. I would suggested anodized bolts for the two holes not in use, to keep the threads clean, and also to reinforce the cranks. 2. The back of the frame is a natural place for a water bottle, so two attachment points there would be welcome. I am just not sure whether it should be oriented front to back or side to side. 3. It is difficult to tighten the bolt that locks the brake handle in place, in the future please reverse it so that it has the head down and the thread up. 4. I fail to see the point of punching out all those holes on the inside of the rim. The weight savings are negligible, I would not bother, and pass on the savings to the consumer, since my only reservation about this uni is that it is a bit too pricey. 5. If you drop the cycle on pavement it will not be damaged, but if you drop it off-road you will bank up the “hips” of the frame, where it bulges out around the tyre. So optional leather wraps would be nice. I made my own, and they saved the paint job on a number of occasions. 6. on the front of the frame, where the seat post goes in, a welded loop of some sort, for attaching a headlight would be nice. Finally, did I say this was a brilliant design? And an amazing machine, on and off the road? Men my age buy sports cars to feel young again, but all I need is my Hatchet.

Had this unicycle 3 weeks now and had a chance to give it a really good work out. It is simply the best unicycle I have (I have 5 now) although the breaks are taking a little getting use to this is more likely to be the fact its the first unicycle I have used with breaks and its not the same as using breaks on a normal bike, but getting better all the time. I have another 26″ Nimbus but this is lighter (its also bigger due to tire size). The biggest difference I have found is that it is much easier to regain your balance, I think due to tire size as as a result have much longer runs. You can also run over much rougher ground. I have fitted the 165 cranks from my other uni which is just my preference and it rides up hills a treat. I love the bike and as always fantastic help and advice from Unicycle.com

Wow! What an amazing bit of kit; from opening the box this MUni (FUni?) is impressive. The tyre is the fattest bit of rubber I’ve ever seen on a MUni (and probably most bikes!), lovely cranks, upgraded seat and a good brake system. The Uni is impressively light and although I’ve not been far so far, I have noticed that the usual wheel-swinging from side to side as you rotate is much reduced on this unicycle (compared to a 19″ Trials, 24″ MUni, 26″ geared and 29″ setup as a commuter). Bring on the red run! 🙂
