Tuning new cranks on a twin chain giraffe unicycle

How to Tune the Chain System on a Twin-Chain Giraffe Unicycle

If you ever need to replace the cranks on a twin-chain giraffe unicycle, it’s essential to “tune” the chain system so that both chains work together correctly. You’ll know the chain system needs tuning if one chain is tight at the front while the other is loose, and vice versa.

There are three methods you can try, depending on how much adjustment is needed. Start with Method 1 and proceed to the next method if necessary.

Method 1: Sprocket Alignment Adjustment

  1. Locate the two plate sprockets on the wheel. These are held by 12 bolts (6 per side).
  2. Loosen each bolt by a single turn while the chains are still in place.
  3. If only a small adjustment is needed, the chains will automatically centralize the sprockets.
  4. If this happens, tighten the bolts back up, and the tuning is complete.
  5. If the chains do not align properly, proceed to Method 2.

Method 2: Sprocket Rotation Adjustment

  1. Repeat the steps in Method 1.
  2. Remove all the bolts from the sprocket with 12 holes, allowing it to rotate.
  3. Rotate the sprocket until the second set of holes aligns with the bolts.
  4. Reattach the bolts. This should allow for a greater adjustment than Method 1.
  5. If this doesn’t solve the issue or worsens it, proceed to Method 3.

Method 3: Sprocket Reversal Adjustment

  1. Remove the wheel from the frame.
  2. Remove the 12-hole plate sprocket and flip it over.
  3. Reattach the sprocket loosely to start.
  4. Remount the wheel and repeat the steps in Method 1.
  5. If necessary, follow up with Method 2.

Maintenance Reminder: Regularly check all bolts and locknuts on your giraffe unicycle to ensure they are tight. Riding with loose parts can cause damage to both the unicycle and yourself.

Good luck with your maintenance!
